KANYAKUMARI:- The Last stone of india
This blog about kanyakumari. The place of devi kanyakumari, the name kanyakumari is combination of two words kanya and kumari, kanya means girl and kumari means virgin. kanyakumari mean a virgin teenaged girl. this place is witness of purity of love and dedication of devi kanyakumari for lord shiva and witness of woman power.
According to a legend, the asuras got supremacy over the devas, leading to adharma, ignorance and injustice. banasura the king of demons, was playing havoc, driving away devas from heaven and meting out cruel punishments to saint and rishis. unable to stand the agony, mother earth sought the help of lord vishnu, the protector of the universe. the lord advised that the devas should propitiate parashakti, who alone capable of destroying banasura. according, the devas performed yagna to propitiate the goddess, who appeared before them and promised to annihilate the evil forces headed by banasura. she came to kanyakumari in the form of virgin girl and began her penance long time and she stand on one leg. Meanwhile Lord Shiva fell in love with her and arrangements for the marriage were made in the midnight a particular day. Now the Devine sage Narada realised that their marriage would destroy the chances of annihilating Banusura because he could be killed only by a virgin. When Lord Shiva was on his way to Kanyakumari from Suchindrum at Valukkamparai 5 kms south of Suchindram, Sage Narada assumed the form of a cock and crowed falsely heralding the break of dawn. Thinking that the auspicious time for the marriage was past, Lord Shiva returned disappointed. The Goddess too decided to remain virgin after that. Then, when Banusura attempted to win the Goddess by force, she killed him with her Chakragudha, and relieved the sufferings of Devas. Then she resumed her penance and remained virgin. She ever-dedicated to Lord Shiva and continues to perform austerities to this day with the hopes that he will one day unite with her.
The Kanya Kumari Temple is located on those southern shores. The teenaged goddess is shown holding a māla, performing eternal austerities as she waits for Lord Shiva to come. According to the temple’s sthala purana, the idol was installed by Lord Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. One specialty of the idol is her diamond nose ring, which sparkles gloriously. The temple’s legend says that the nose ring was obtained from a king cobra and that light reflects off it so brightly that once an ancient mariner mistook it for a lighthouse. Sailing his ship towards the beacon, he wrecked upon the Kanya Kumari rocks. In order to prevent such a tragedy from happening again, the eastern door to the temple’s sanctum sanctorum is only opened on five special occasions throughout the year.

The Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest proponents of Vedanta- a key Hindu philosophy that aims to the eternal truth of life. Although the idea was mooted in 1962 to coincide with the birth centenary of Swami Vivekananda, the monument was built only around 1970.
It was on this rock that the Swami Vivekananda meditated before leaving for Chicago to address the World Religious Conference in 1892. There’s also an interesting story that goes like this.
After visiting the Kanyakumari Amman temple, Swami Vivekananda stood on the seashore gazing at two rocks that stood some furlongs away. He was seized by a sudden desire to visit these rocks. Legend has it that one of these rocks was the exact place where the Goddess Bhagawathi Amman stood in penance. As proof of this belief, there’s a small projection on the rock that resembles a human foot. In fact, the rock has been called Sri Pada Parai (in Tamil) since Puranic times; roughly translated, it means the rock with the Goddess’s feet. Since he did not have money to pay for the boatmen (to ferry him to the rock), he swam all the way to the rock. He sat in meditation for three days and nights with nothing but the ocean for company. Being an ardent devotee of Kali, it was only to be expected of him to choose this place. It was here that Swami Vivekananda realized the need to reawaken India from its spiritual ignorance.
